It's hard to understand God because we are not God.God is not a person, like you and me. God was not made in our image. We were made in the image of God. That is why most of man's sin centers around trying to usurp God. We were made in the image of God in that we reflect some of the attributes of God. For example, we have a sense of justice, mercy, and love. We cannot, however, for example, create a universe or raise people back to life who have been dead long enough for their corpses to begin rotting. God is absolutely sovereign over all His creation. He made it! He has the power to take life and to give it. It is God's right as the all-powerful Creator of Heaven and Earth to create some for glory and some for damnation.
God is God. His name is I AM THAT I AM. He is YAWEH. He is self-existent; He is because He is. No other being can claim that.
If God changed, none of us could exist. He thinks, therefore, we are. God thinks, but not in the way you and I think. His thoughts are ever-present, not subject to the constraints of time. If God ever changed His mind, we would cease to exist because the universe would start over again.
The reason we say that God is omni-present is not so much because of what God is, though He is, but because of what we are. We are constrained to time and space. Time and space exist only because God continually causes them to exist.
There are several good examples of this, but the simplest one that comes to mind is the atom. As we understand it an atom has a nucleus made up of protons and neutrons surrounded by an electron cloud. The electrons are held in their microscopic orbits by the protons in the nucleus because opposite charges attract. But, what holds the protons together? They should blow apart with terrific force, but they don't. Modern science says this is the nucleic effect, or neutron force. (I'm sure some science geek out there can give me its current name.) It's defined as the force that holds the protons together. Basically, they don't know what holds the protons together. Science just assumes it has something to do with the neutrons.
It is Almighty God who continually has his thoughts fixed upon this universe, and that is why our universe exists from one moment to the next. He is constantly in control. If God ever changed His mind as to how history, great or small (yes, even what's for dinner), was to unfold the universe would cease to exist.
I don't know how else to explain it. We are because He is. Our very existence relies upon the fact that God does not change.
