Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary president Paige Patterson says families need to be concerned that in America, 60% of college students are female. He predicts that in a few years, men will be increasingly underrepresented among “the intelligentsia” and will gradually cede leadership in many areas to women.

Patterson laments that most of the women ascending to these new roles will maintain a major focus on a career, not on the family and on children.

“Instead of encouraging adolescents to cut the apron strings of mother and venture out into society, we are begging mothers not to cut the apron strings [to] their babies and catapult them prematurely into a menacing world,” said the two-time president of the Southern Baptist Convention. “Mom and hot apple pie have been replaced by institutional daycare centers and cold apple turnovers at McDonald's.”

Why would such a thing happen on a world-scale? Answer, it is a spiritual battle. As in the days of the prophet Elisha, things look grim, but those who are with us are more than those who are with them. (2 Kings 6:16) Even if the enemies of God overtake the world that is all they can do. Jesus Christ has raised His standard against them. By His death on the cross He gained victory over death, and delivered those who would believe from sin and the second death. Even if the entire world is consumed it is but only for a moment. There is a day of reckoning fast approaching.

Leadership is a necessity. Without leadership there is anarchy. God created Eve to be a helper and a wife for Adam. However, man in his infinite wisdom has turned this on its head. Husbands and fathers routinely abandon their families. When the do remain, more often than not, they do not lead, or they do not lead biblically. The wives and mothers are forced to assume a leadership role just to maintain some semblance of order and security. These failings lie squarely on the backs on men as husbands and fathers. Do you, O man, think that God will absolve you of your responsibilities simply because you have absolved yourself? Thank again! Your day of reckoning is fast approaching.

The Apostle James wrote, “My brethren, let not many of you become teachers, knowing that we shall receive a stricter judgment.” (3:1) He was writing about leaders in the church, but this is also applicable to leaders in the home. If you are a husband, if you are a father, you are a teacher. You have a responsibility before God to lead your wife (1 Corinthians 14:35) and children (Proverbs 22:6), whether you recognize it or not. God does not change (Malachi 3:6), and His righteous judgments will not change because He issues them. That is why God is the only perfect judge. He is not partial, he is no respecter of men, but He always judges rightly from His perfect law of liberty.

Husbands, fathers, do what God has called you to do. Lead; be a servant leader; lead by example as Christ leads His Church.
