Truth by Popular Vote

Jim Fell

If a tree falls in the forest, and no one was around to see or hear it fall, did it make a noise? This is how our world defines truth today: perception and concensus. After all, there is no absolute truth, or, even if there is such a thing, no one can be absolutely certain of it.

Every few days I get email from a “christian” website detailing the results of their latest poll. Typically, these polls focus on responses to questions about morality and current events. For example, one such question was along the lines of, Is it okay for Christians to have sex before marriage? It is hard to believe that such a question even needs asking, but what is even more difficult to believe is the audacity of some so-called christians who seem to think that what is right and what is wrong depends upon the popular views of the day. This being the case, I suppose a good question for the next poll would be to ask, “Is is wrong for a Christian to commit murder?” By the reasoning of the day, if we can get enough people to respond “No,” a lot of space in our jails will free up overnight and that fiscal drain on the system will be eliminted.

This idea that truth is relative and can be arrived at simply by a majority vote goes far beyond marriage and murder. It pervades everything in our culture today.

Absolute truth is absolutely real, determined by an absolute God.

If one were to step out in front of an oncoming bus, I guaurantee you, the bus absolutely will win. You know this. We all know this. This “bus-truth” is not disputed by anyone because there is no disputing it.

Jesus said, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, but by Me.” This too is truth. (By the way, truth is truth; all truth is absolute. To say some truths are absolutely true whereas other “truths” are not so true is to play semantics, and is utter folly.) You would probably agree that this statement would never be labelled as truth by a popular vote. In fact, the same is true of most of the truly important truths. As the importance, or veracity, of a truth increases, the more it is opposed by en masse.

There was a time when the consensus was that the earth was flat. However, we know today that thee earth is in indeed flat. If there is no absolute truth, who is to say that the earth is not flat?  However, technically speaking, neither is the earth a perfect sphere.  It is a slightly eliptical. Even if everyone on the planet believed that it was as flat as a pancake, that would not make it so. Consensual denial of truth simply does not, has not, and will never shape or define truth.

Thompson Surge Means Conservatives Are Desperate

By Chuck Baldwin.

Many conservatives (including Christian conservatives) seem to be jumping on the Fred Thompson bandwagon. As far as Republican presidential contenders go, the biggest loser of the Thompson surge is Mitt Romney. Many conservatives were supporting Romney only because they perceived him as being the best chance to beat Rudy Giuliani. A Hillary Clinton vs. Rudy [...]

They’re Lying to Us

By Coach Dave Daubenmire.

Lying has become a way of life in America. In fact, it is so common that we almost expect it. I don’t know if America can ever recover from our acceptance of lying. Honesty used to be a virtue. Today it is a weakness. The truthful are ridiculed. The dishonest are [...]

Exorbitant Costs of Illegal Migration into America

By Frosty Wooldridge.

“Everything is free in America!” Really? Two billion unfortunates in third-world nations hunger for a chance to migrate to America. While in-migration in small numbers may be sensible for specific reasons, bringing countless third-world people to the U.S. with no strategic plan or goals proves foolish and dangerous. Sufficient reasons exist [...]

9/11, Six Years Later

By Chuck Baldwin.

First, I need to correct something I said in my last column. In the column, I referred to Alan Stang’s book “Not Holier Than Thou,” in which he points out that President Bush has appointed numerous known homosexuals to high public office, just as did his predecessor, Bill Clinton. I included in that list former [...]

Senate Embarrassments Joe Biden and Larry Craig

By Cliff Kincaid.

Senate Republicans have suffered a lot of embarrassment over the antics of Sen. Larry Craig, a pro-family politician who played footsy with another man in a bathroom. But the Democrats have their own embarrassments, and one of them is presidential candidate Senator Joseph Biden, their leading foreign policy “expert.” His logic was on display on [...]

Thoughts on the Larry Craig Scandal

By Chuck Baldwin.

The recent bathroom sex scandal involving Republican Idaho Senator Larry Craig has become a political hornet’s nest. However, to those who are privy to the real-life goings-on among the political elite in Washington, D.C., this comes as no surprise. Extracurricular sexual activity in Washington, D.C., is about as uncommon as thunderstorms in the summertime. The element [...]

U.S. Truckers’ Jobs on Chopping Blocks

By Frosty Wooldridge.

Via President Bush and Congress’ “Mexican Truck Pilot” program, American trucking will change: for the worse. Thousands of Mexican drivers—without formal driving standards, without drug testing and without legal passports to identify them to us—shortly will invade America’s freeways. They lack the ability to write and read in English, jeopardizing safety checks and logbook protocol. [...]

The Sanctuary Deception

By David J. Stoddard.

The infamous Elvira Arellano (probably not her real name) is back on Mexican soil as of this moment. Elvira will likely return with a new name and new documents once LA Raza, MALDEF, LULAC and the liberal churches are through with her. She had become a “poster child” for the “sanctuary movement” and a cause [...]

Yesterday Parents and Friends of Ex-Gays & Gays (PFOX), Citizens for a Responsible Curriculum, and Family Leader Network filed a legal motion in the Circuit Court for Montgomery County, Maryland to stay the implementation of a scientifically flawed and politically biased sexuality curriculum targeted to middle and high school students in Montgomery County, Maryland. The local [...]

Botched Abortion Victim Sues Planned Parenthood Abortionist

By Operation Rescue.

As pro-lifers protested on Saturday at the Omaha home of Planned Parenthood abortionist Meryl Severson, news broke that Severson is being sued by a 40-year old woman whose abortion he botched. The woman, who filed the suit Friday under the pseudonym “Jane Roe,” alleges that Severson so severely botched her abortion that she lost 80% of [...]

Political Correctness: Cultural Marxism

By Dr. Laurie Roth.

It’s a phrase we throw around attaching it to liberals, the drifting of our morals, wanting to be loved and fear of rejection and lawsuits. In fact, as the spirit of political correctness weaves its way through our schools, culture, language, laws and rules of engagement in war, it is hardly just an “oversensitive” drift! [...]

Collateral Kids — Unwelcome Stats in Pro-sports

By Ellen Makkai.

Those guffaws floating over Colorado on Sunday morning didn’t come from the comic strips in The Denver Post but from the Sports section. With stunning velocity, Denver Bronco Travis Henry is racking up statistics not usually charted in professional sports; he has scored nine illegitimate kids with nine different women. Henry is outdistanced, however, by [...]
